Dr Bella is a urological surgeon, researcher and educator. He is the Greta and John Hansen Chair in Men's Health Research, one of only four globally and the first in Canada, Assistant Professor of Urology and Director of Basic Urologic Research at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and Associate Scientist (Neuroscience) at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, University of Ottawa, Canada. Dr Bella was accepted to medical school at McMaster University, and after completing his studies trained in General Surgery at McMaster followed by Urological Surgery at University of Western Ontario. Dr Bella then completed a combined research and clinical fellowship under Dr Tom F. Lue at the University of California San Francisco; he was the first American Foundation for Urologic Disease Robert J. Krane Scholar, received a California Urology Foundation Award for stem cell research, and was named the American Urologic Association Foundation Outstanding Graduate Scholar while at UCSF. Dr Bella primary clinical interests are management of post-prostate cancer treatment complications, surgical management of Peyronie's disease, and complex reconstructive urogenital surgeries. The ultimate goal of Dr. Bella's research is to develop novel approaches to prevent or repair the nerve damage that can occur during treatments for prostate cancer. His laboratory focuses on the neurobiology of cavernous nerve response to injury, with emphasis on molecular mechanisms involved in neuroprotection and neuroregeneration. Dr Bella's research also has implications for the repair and regeneration of other types of nerves. Dr Bella was a Canadian Urological Association Scholar from 2008-2010, and currently holds peer-reviewed grants from the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada, Canadian Male Sexual Health Council, Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and the Northeastern Section of the American Urological Association. Dr Bella has coauthored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the medical literature to date and has been awarded several national and international prizes for basic and clinical research, including the prestigious Emile Tanagho Prize for Innovative Research in Brussels in 2009. Dr Bella has completed over 200 clinical and basic science research presentations at meetings on five continents, and is frequent faculty at international symposia. In 2011, he was named a Canadian Urological Association - European Association of Urology, traveling and lecturing to Europe's premier institutions as visiting professor in Urology. He is also an active member of several medical and surgical societies including the Canadian Urological Association, American Urological Association, Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the Society for Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons and reviews for over a dozen medical journals.

Bio:
Dr. Luke Lavallee is a Surgical Urologic Oncologist at The Ottawa Hospital, an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, and an Associate Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He attended medical school at McGill University, followed by a urology residency at the University of Ottawa. He then completed a fellowship in urologic oncology and robotic surgery concurrent with a Master’s degree in epidemiology at the Ottawa Hospital within the Clinician Investigator Program.
Dr. Lavallee is an active member of the International Evidence Based Urology Group, the Kidney Cancer Research Network of Canada, the Society of Urologic Oncology, and both Canadian and American Urology Associations. He has received numerous awards, acknowledgements, and research grants for his work in kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers.
