Dr. Balaa received his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Ottawa and his MD degree at the University of Western Ontario in 2000. Dr. Balaa then returned to University of Ottawa and completed a residency in General Surgery, followed by two clinical fellowships: Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Ottawa, and Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Balaa has a keen interest in medical education. He has completed a Masters degree in Medical Education through the Center for Medical Education at the University of Dundee. His interest in surgical education relates to curriculum development and assessment tools for surgical skills programs. He recently completed a term as Program Director for the Division of General Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Bertens completed medical school and General Surgery residency the University of Western Ontario. She then went on to complete a fellowship in Hepatobiliary surgery at Virginia Mason Medical Centre in Seattle, Washington. In addition Dr. Bertens has completed a Masters of Public Health with a focus in quantitative methods at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her research interests include the interface between sociodemographic factors and access to surgical care.

Dr. Carolyn Nessim is a Surgical Oncologist who specializes in the treatment of Melanoma and other skin cancers, Soft Tissue Sarcoma/GIST and Gastric Cancer.

Bio

Dr. Lara Williams is a dual fellowship trained colorectal and minimally invasive surgeon at The Ottawa Hospital. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Guelph.  Dr. Williams obtained her medical degree at the University of Western Ontario and was awarded the Medical Alumni Gold Medal. 

Dr. Williams graduated from the General Surgery program at Dalhousie University in 2009.  During her residency she completed her Masters of Medical Sciences, investigating the molecular pathogenesis of esophageal adenocarcinoma.  She also successfully completed the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Clinician Investigator Program. 

Dr. Williams has gone on to complete Fellowships in Colorectal Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Ottawa.  Dr. Williams had an academic surgical practice at Dalhousie University from 2011 to 2015 and joined the Department of Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital in August 2015. She is a member of a four-surgeon group practice model alongside Drs. Husein Moloo, Isabelle Raiche, and Reilly Musselman (The Ottawa Colorectal Group).

Dr. Williams’ clinical interests include the application of minimally invasive techniques to the surgical management of patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other benign colorectal diseases. Her research interests include clinical outcomes and health services – related research, with a focus on the development and implementation of models of surgical care to facilitate quality improvement initiatives in Colorectal Cancer.
