Currently the Department of Surgery has eight Divisions, each with a residency training program and fellowship positions. These include: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery. The Paediatric Surgical specialties have their home at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO): Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery, Paediatric Orthopedic Surgery, Paediatric Plastic Surgery, and Paediatric Urology.
There are 125 Surgeons and five PhD scientists with full appointments in the Department of Surgery at the University of Ottawa. Over 31% of the Faculty have secondary degrees (PhD., Masters in Education, Clinical Epidemiology, Public Health, Hospital Administration and Business Administration) There are 108 residents and 32 Fellows in various disciplines. For the current year, there is $ 5M in peer-reviewed research funding where the Faculty members participate as principal or co principal investigators. This amount doubles when collaborator status, and non-peer reviewed research funding are considered.
In the last ten years, the Department of Surgery has made great strides in the development of Minimally Invasive techniques in all Divisions and we feel that we are at the forefront of this movement in Canada. In the current strategic plan, there will be tremendous efforts towards quality and patient safety. The Ottawa Hospital is the first Health Sciences Centre in Canada to join the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) in its multispecialty, high volume option.
We are also proud of our new training facility. The University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) is a partnership of The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa. It is the largest centre in Canada (22,000 sq. feet) and one of the largest in North America. The uOSSC will enhance patient safety by improving the education opportunities for surgeons and forming best clinical practice through innovative research. The Centre has a superb complement of PhD educators and researchers along with many Faculty members with a Masters in Education background to oversee the rapid development of its activities.
In a nutshell, this is who we are, and we are working hard to get even better!
