Division of Cardiac Surgery

About the Division

The Division of Cardiac Surgery comprises eight full-time cardiac surgeons based at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (located at The Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus). Adult cardiac surgery for Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec is performed exclusively at the Heart Institute which also receives referrals from elsewhere in Ontario and across Canada . Congenital heart surgery is performed at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario for pediatrics and at the Heart Institute for adults. There are separate dedicated teams who perform thoracic surgery at The Ottawa Hospital – General Campus and vascular surgery at The Ottawa Hospital – Civic Campus.

Approximately 1,600 open-heart procedures are performed annually at the Heart Institute. The surgical procedures use state-of-the art techniques for the treatment of diseases of the heart and thoracic aorta. The full spectrum of surgery is offered, including coronary artery bypass, both on-pump and off-pump, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complex valve repair, valve replacement, electrophysiology surgery, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, complex aortic reconstruction, mechanical circulatory support and transplantation.

The Division of Cardiac Surgery is dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching and research. There is a strong commitment to teaching and the training program for surgeons is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The faculty members are all geographic full-time University appointees and there is an exciting and growing research program in both basic science and clinical medicine.
