Dr. Brenda Wilson is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

Dr Brenda Wilson trained as a physician at the Universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh, and in public health at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. She trained as a specialist in public health medicine at the Northern Regional Health Authority in England, and Grampian Health Board in Scotland. Following active practice as a public health physician in the UK National Health Service, Dr Wilson held a faculty appointment in the Department of Public Health at the University of Aberdeen from 1991-2001, and took up her current position in Ottawa in 2002.
Dr Wilson’s research interests lie in public health genetics and health services and policy research. She is involved in a range of projects, including assessing the utility of family history as a tool for chronic disease prevention, developing and evaluating interventions in genetics education and knowledge translation, public engagement in genomics health policy development, using outcome measures in genetics health services, family communication and disclosure of shared risks, and integrating ethical, legal and social issues into technology assessment processes. She led GeneSens, a founding CIHR-ICE team in genetics health services research, and is lead principal investigator of the CIHR Emerging Team in Genomics in Screening. She is also a principal with the Ontario Training Centre in Health Services & Policy Research.
Dr Wilson is a member of the scientific advisory board for the Atlantic Medical Genetics and Genomics Initiative, and of the CIHR Institute of Genetics/Institute of Health Services and Policy Research Priorities and Planning Committee for Health Services for Genetic Disease. She is a past member of the Ontario Advisory Committee on Genetics, and CIHR’s Research Integrity Committee.
Brenda loves NHL Hockey and the Ottawa Senators. She saw the Stanley Cup when Boston Bruins (2011 Stanley Cup winners) GM Peter Chiarelli brought it to the University of Ottawa in summer 2011.
