2014-2015 Message from Division Head Dr. Hazen Gandy

Dr. Hazen Gandy
Dr. Hazen Gandy

2014-2015 has seen a number of exciting developments for the Division. In response to continuing significant demands for clinical services Dr. Kathleen Pajer, as our new Chief of Psychiatry at CHEO and Regional Chief for CY-SPMHS together with other senior leaders at both CHEO and the Royal have unveiled a new Strategic Plan for CY-SPMHS focusing on four goals:

  1. Providing quality patient care and experience;
  2. Enhancing community partnerships;
  3. Focusing on outcomes, accountability and research; and
  4. Staff, physician and trainee engagement.

This strategic plan has emerged following extensive consultation with multiple stakeholders representing hundreds of staff both within the community and the hospital sectors. The remainder of 2015 will see the beginning implementation of the strategic plan across the region.

Our PGY 6 Subspecialty Training Program has accepted 3 new candidates, two of whom have started the program in July 2015. Supporting our trainees are newly-selected educational leaders: Dr. Katherine Matheson as our Director of Core Training and Dr. Leanna Isserlin, Director of the PGY-6 subspecialty training program. Dr. Isserlin will lead us through an accreditation process for the subspecialty program to take place in 2016.

Significant and exciting activity has occurred on the mental health research leadership front in 2014-2015. Active recruitment is presently underway for 3 important leadership positions in Child and Youth Mental Health Research. These include recruitment for a new Director of Youth Psychiatry Research for the IMHR and the Royal as well as recent postings for a Senior Research Chair in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and a second Research Chair in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry based at CHEO and the CHEO Research Institute. It is expected these leadership positions will generate exceptional opportunities to advance Child and Youth Mental Health Research through linkages between the CHEO Research Institute, IMHR, the University of Ottawa’s Brain and Mind Institute and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

Finally, the Royal has welcomed Dr. Ginette Gillard from Pierre Janet. Dr. Michelle Temple has resigned from CHEO to pursue the career opportunities in Montréal. She has been the most valuable clinician and leader to numerous clinical programs at CHEO and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Accredited Residency Training Program in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Recently, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has granted approval for a subspecialty in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The University of Ottawa Department of Psychiatry has received approval as a Royal College approved training site for sub-specialization in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Presently we are receiving applications for candidates wishing to complete a PGY6 year in our subspecialty program.

Continuing Medical Education

Through the generous financial support of the CHEO Psychiatry Associates, the CPA and Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are able to offer a number of Continuing Medical Events throughout the year focusing on a variety of topics relevant to our subspecialty.

Additionally, many members of the division participate in various CME activities alone or in conjunction with other department of psychiatry or department of medicine events. These events support continuing medical education for primary care practitioners or pediatricians were for various children’s mental health agencies in Ontario and the Eastern Ontario region.
