
The
site should be prepped with iodinated solution, unless an allergy
to iodine exists. Application is usually in a circular fashion,
starting from the planned needle insertion point and encompassing
the interspace above and below. Apply the solution at least three
times. The last application is followed by an application of isopropyl
alcohol or a chlorhexidene based solution to wash off the iodinated
solution. The iodinated solution must be carefully removed because
the inadvertent introduction of iodine into the subarachnoid space
can produce an irritative arachnoiditis.
