  Replace the stylet fully into the spinal needle before withdrawing the needle. This will avoid aspiration of the lumbar nerve root and adjacent subarachnid tissue on withdrawal. Inform the patient that the procedure is finished and remove the needle in one smooth motion. Keep a gauze ready in the opposite hand to apply pressure on the puncture site for a short time. A band-aid is placed at the site.
