Use of a laptop in the Medical eCurriculum
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa offers an on-line electronic curriculum with access to computer-based learning modules. These modules will have improved graphics, animations and videos, online quizzes, and online evaluations to complement the existing paper-based curriculum. An important by-product of our approach is curriculum renewal. Our goals include an increased computer literacy of our graduating physicians, allowing these physicians to effectively use information technology to deliver better patient care.
It is important to realize that the online medical curriculum is not an add-on to the medical curriculum, but is a fundamental cornerstone to our medical curriculum and is fully integrated into the curriculum.
At the same time, there is no reduction of the one-on-one student and faculty interaction so important to the learning of medicine.
To summarize, the Faculty uses computers to:
- access our technologically enhanced course materials: CBL (case-based learning), lectures and labs;
- access a toolkit for medical studies (computer-based medical dictionary, basic science modules, and externally produced learn-ware);
- improve the computer literacy for students and faculty;
- improve knowledge of informatics and evidence-based medicine for students;
- improve communication with email between students and faculty and to foster online collaboration of students and faculty;
- improve the evaluation of students with online testing;
- improve the evaluation of courses and professors.
Laptop Purchase
Students are REQUIRED to use a laptop in class from day one. Note that the purchase of the University recommended models is not mandatory and that you can use your own laptop as long as it meets the requirements mandated by the Faculty's medical eCurriculum.
Contrary to the past few years, the Faculty will not offer the program this year to purchase computers for its students because a new comparable program has been implemented by the University of Ottawa for all students. We invite you to visit the following website to get a laptop:

The Department of Technology Services (Medtech) of the Faculty of Medicine will offer to all its students the needed technical support to facilitate the repair and troubleshooting of their laptops. The Medtech team is there for you so that you do not have to worry about the technology involvement while you are pursuing your medical education.
