Services offered

Varying levels of service

The Faculty of Medicine provides different levels of service depending on the type of Web site you are implementing. The main classifications that we have identified are:

Please consult the section dedicated to the type of Web site you require (below) as we offer different services depending on your site's classification.

Web hosting service

In most cases, if the prospective Web site is related to the Faculty of Medicine in any way shape or form (student association; research group, Faculty department or service, sites for UofO residents, etc...), we will provide Web hosting services.

This implies:

  1. Giving your group a Web address on the World Wide Web.

  2. Allocating storage space on the Faculty's Web server.

  3. Providing as many accounts as required for you to update your Web files: i.e. if you have multiple webmasters.

Web development service

The Faculty does not offer Web development as such. This means that, in general, we will not build and/or maintain your Web site for you. Please consult the section dedicated to your site's classification for exceptions.

Web address (URL)

Please consult the section dedicated to your site's classification for information about the allocated URL.

Note that all URL on our Web server are case insensitive!

If you need your own domain name, for example: http://www.meds2003.ca, you will need to organize this with a third party who supplies such a service (we can recommend a service provider whose offering is compatible with our infrastructure). Note that there is a cost involved with getting your own URL.

Allocated disk space

Please consult the section dedicated to your site's classification for information about allocated disk space. Note that listed values are initial values and that you can request additional resources if your group is able to demonstrate a legitimate requirement.

Faculty template

The Faculty of Medicine has a Web template which we can provide. If you decide to use the template we will train you on its use. We strongly encourage you to use the Faculty template: not only will you benefit from more support but it fosters a common look and feel and positively impacts the Faculty's Web presence.

Web Sites for Departments and Services

If you are a department or a service looking to start a Web site, the Faculty of Medicine can assist you directly with your Web venture.

  1. We will provide you with a Web address (URL) along with disk space on the Faculty's Web server (www.med.uottawa.ca).

  2. We will provide as many accounts as required for you to update your Web files (i.e. if you have
    multiple webmasters) and will teach you how to access your Web site folder.

  3. We give you the opportunity to use the Faculty Web template; if you decide to use the Faculty template, we will train you on its use if desired.

  4. If, and only if, you decide to adopt the Faculty standard (i.e. use the Faculty template), we will also provide:

    • Full training for your Web resources (ongoing if required);
    • Ongoing support relating to the maintenance of your Web site;
    • Help designing your site structure if desired.
