Financial Aid Awareness Program
The Faculty of Medicine is conscious that students registered in our undergraduate medical program are faced with many financial constraints. In collaboration with the University’s Central Financial Aid and Awards Service we have developed an awareness program in the hope that we can alleviate some of the stress. Our philosophy: “Any student wishing to pursue a career in medicine should not be denied this opportunity due to financial barriers”.
We feel that you should be apprised of all of the resources available to help you in the planning for your financial needs.
To help you better understand the process, we suggest you look at the Financial Aid and Awards Office web site: http://www.financialaid.uottawa.ca and: http://www.pretsetbourses.uottawa.ca/Default.aspx?tabid=2991
The Financial Aid & Awards office also offers individual financial consultation if needed. During these meetings they will answer general questions related to budget management, as well as specific counseling on personal financial requirements.
Changes to Bursaries for Students in the Faculty of Medicine (MD) Coming into effect September 2010
The Financial Aid and Awards Service would like to advise you of some major changes to bursaries available for students in the MD Program.
In order to simplify the process for the bursaries currently available and to make the funds available for students more quickly, the Financial Aid and Awards Service has combined the education bursaries, interest relief bursaries and the bursary know as the “Mandated Need Bursary” to create one single bursary, the Education Bursary in Medicine.
Beginning in September 2010, this bursary will be available for students in the MD Program.
The new Education Bursary in Medicine (either $4,500 or $2,000) will be automatically credited to your student account four to six weeks after you have received your student loan. You can, therefore, count on these additional funds to be available as early as the beginning of the academic year.
Eligibility criteria for the new bursary for students in the MD Program:
- Be registered full time in the Faculty of Medicine for the fall and winter sessions (September to May)
- Be a Canadian citizen, or have permanent resident or protected person status
- Be eligible for and have received government financial aid
Number: unlimited
Value: $4,500 or $2,000
- One bursary in the amount of $4,500 is awarded to full-time students admitted for the first time to the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine who are registered in the fall and winter sessions (September to May) and who have received financial aid from their home province.
- One bursary in the amount of $2,000 is awarded to returning full-time students in the Faculty of Medicine who are registered in the fall and winter sessions (September to May) and who have received financial aid from their home province.
How to apply: Application is not required. This bursary will be automatically credited to your student account after you have received your government financial aid. You can pick up your funds at Roger-Guindon on specific dates in August, September and January or at the Financial Aid and Awards office at any time during the year.
Deadline: None (the bursary is awarded automatically)
