Aboriginal Celebration
The mandate of the Aboriginal Program is to increase awareness of Aboriginal health issues for students, faculty and staff. To that end, an Aboriginal Celebration is held annually during the second week of medical school for first year students. This full day event is dedicated to Aboriginal health, where students are introduced to the Aboriginal healing journey through curriculum that includes reviewing traditional ceremonies, an Aboriginal historical perspective, and Aboriginal culture.
The celebration which includes aboriginal specialties and artistic performances, will take place on Wednesday, September 12, 2012.
This event is reserved for our first year students.

Presenters
Honorary co-presidents |
Two honorary co-presidents for the graduation ceremony are chosen by the students each year, one for the Anglophone stream, one for the Francophone stream. The honorary co-presidents must be members of the faculty, who have greatly contributed to the program during the past four years.
One of the honorary co-presidents will present the diploma to the graduate. However, Graduands are able to select a special presenter (for example, a parent, sibling, relative, mentor), rather than receiving their diploma from one of the honorary co-presidents.
Criteria for choosing a special presenter:
- Only one (1) presenter per graduand is permitted.
- Presenter must hold an MD degree from a recognized University, or be a member of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa.
The name of the presenter must be communicated to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office by February 21, 2012 via the Information-gathering Questionnaire available via the students’ One45 account.
Please note that the presenters will be wearing a gown, and will be a part of the faculty procession. They will remain on the stage during the ceremony. |
Gowns |
Gowns will be assigned according to sizing information provided in the One45 Information-gathering Questionnaire.
Graduands must pick-up their gown on the day of the Ceremony at 12:30 pm in the assigned room at the Ottawa Convention Center.
Gowns must be returned in the room within 45 minutes after the end of the ceremony.
You will be able to rent a gown and hood for photos at another time than graduation. Please call the infoservice for details: INFOSERVICE 613-562-5700 (Telephone) 613-562-5323 (Fax) infoserv@uOttawa.ca (E-mail) |
Photography |
A professional photographer will be on site.
A group picture of the graduands in their gown will be taken immediately after the ceremony. The photographer will take individual pictures, without pose setting, during the ceremony at the moment of presentation of parchment and diploma.
The Faculty of Medicine will offer four (4) copies of the picture taken when each graduate receives their diploma, and one (1) group picture, free of charge. These will be mailed to each graduate, using the mailing address supplied through the information gathering questionnaire-One45.
The photographer will be taking photos throughout the event. These can be ordered through the photographer.
Your guests are permitted to take pictures during the ceremony, but must remain at their seat to do so.
You will be able to take your own pictures in your gown for up to 45 minutes after the ceremony. |

Canadian Graduation Questionnaire 2012 |
Canadian Graduation Questionnaire 2012 (Association of American Medical Colleges) regarding application process and medical education. The Faculty would be very grateful if students would kindly ensure a 100 percent response rate. This is essential to your and our ability to affect change as deemed necessary by our graduands. Thank you in advance for your participation.
This is a 20-minute exercise well worth the effort by absolutely everyone, before June 8, 2012. It will help your professors and your peers. |
