Summer 2012 Summer Studentships
Instructions and Guidelines
Eligibility:
Summer studentships are available on a competitive basis for undergraduate medical students at the University of Ottawa who are enrolled in their first or second year of training. These awards are restricted to students working with supervisors affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
PART 1- Supervisors
Supervisors are invited to complete the Supervisor Project Description form and return by email to resmed@uottawa.ca no later than January 9th, 2012. These will be uploaded to the faculty website and advertised to the students.
PART 2 - Students
Students can apply to one project only. Students should contact prospective supervisors. The supervisor will decide which student will work on a given project. A complete application includes:
- Student application form
- Curriculum vitae
- A cover letter explaining your interest in the project
Note: If your project is accepted you will need the following:
- B form (Please include a void cheque with your B form)
- Offer of Soft-Funded Scholarship Form: (only sections 1&4 are to be completed)
Please make sure student and PI sign offer Soft-Funded and B-form (original signature)
All applications will be considered for external awards, where eligible. However, it will be helpful if students identify external awards for which they wish to be considered, on the application form. There are conditions associated with several of the external awards so students should carefully review the information for each award.
Return the completed application to the Research Office, Faculty of Medicine, room 2033 by March 5th, 2012 or send in PDF format to resmed@uottawa.ca.
Once all applications are received by the Research Office, a selection committee will review the applications, rank the applications and decide which projects are to be funded. The ranking of an application is based on the cover letter, the CV and the project description.
All students and supervisors will be contacted, advising them of the results, by April 5th, 2012. For research projects, the stipend for a student work term is approximately $3,500 from Faculty or external funds, plus a $1,500 from the supervisor for a total of $5,000, although some of the agencies cover the full $5000 stipend. The stipend is paid to the student directly by the University on the 15th and 30th of each month, normally starting June 15th. The pay stubs for the stipends are now sent electronically to a uOttawa email address, or via HR Profile. You can access HR Profile at the following url: https://web30.uottawa.ca/BPRODE/twbkwbis.P_GenMenu?name=homepage (HR Profile Instructions).
Please note that studentships will be between 10 and 13 weeks depending on the award. If students are selected to receive a Mach-Gaensslen award, students will be required to fill out time sensitive questionnaires pre and post studentship. They must also be prepared to provide their contact information for 5 years following the summer studentship.
It is mandatory for students to present a poster of their project at a forum to be held in the early fall of 2012. All supervisors participating in the studentship program will be expected to serve as judges at the forum.
