Research & Innovation
“The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting both basic and clinical research of the highest quality. Many of our high profile research projects are conducted in partnership with affiliated-teaching hospitals and research institutes. These partnerships lead to biomedical discoveries that have a significant impact on health care. In the process they educate the next generation of Canadian scientists, Our research activity also attracts significant investment, which stimulates the Ottawa economy.”
— Dr. Bernard Jasmin, Vice-Dean, Research
Research at the Faculty of Medicine has seen substantial growth in the past ten years to the point where we are now a research-intensive institution. A decade ago, we ranked 12th among Canadian faculties conducting medical research. Today, we rank in the top five. The Faculty attracts about 60 percent of the external research funding received by the university, making a substantial contribution to uOttawa’s research intensity goals.
Our scientists are pursuing four key areas of research: biomedical, clinical, health systems and services, and population and public health. A wide range of research projects cover areas including brain research, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, system biology, stem cell biology, genomics, clinical epidemiology, cancer, and molecular and regenerative medicine.
Building on its research excellence, the Faculty and its affiliated research institute partners will focus efforts during the coming decades on the following strategic areas:
- Brain-related research (neurological and psychiatric illnesses) through the emerging U of Ottawa Brain and Mind Research Institute,
- Cardiovascular research in partnership with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and
- Medical education research, through the Academy for Innovation in Medical Education (AIME)
