Depending on your revenue, income taxes can represent a significant portion of your salary. As a PDF (as opposed to a PDA) income taxes are not always automatically deducted at the source (on every pay check). Automatic pay deductions can be set up by speaking with the financial section of your department.
In some cases your department may offer some top up incentive to compensate for the taxes which are now deducted from a post-doc salary. To find if theis applies to you, contact the financial section of your department.
