Health Insurance

For Non-Canadian Residents on Arrival:

Foreign Postdocs (those with work permits) who live in the Province of Ontario are eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) once they have been living in the province for 3 months. You should apply for the insurance as soon as arrive in Ottawa in order for your coverage to begin as soon as possible. In the meantime, the University of Ottawa will provide you with the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). To apply, contact the University of Ottawa Human Resources.

OHIP and UHIP cover a wide range of medical services, including:

  • Check-ups with your family doctor or at walk-in clinics
  • Hospital visits
  • Dental Surgery
  • Eye examinations
  • Some vaccinations
OHIP does not cover the cost of prescription drugs. For more information on OHIP, visit the Ontario Immigration - Health Care

For all New Postdocs

When you register as a postdoc (and each time your contract is renewed) Canadian residents and foreign postdocs can also subscribte to a Supplementary Health Insurance Plan that covers dental care, prescription drugs, etc. You must register for this insurance within 30 days of your contract start date!!
