Discography is a procedure which allows the neuroradiologist to examine the integrity intervertebral discs. It can also be used to determine the extent of pathology within the discs themselves.
A small calibre needle is inserted into the substance of the disk. The disk is then injected with a contrast dye and the distribution of the dye is observed using fluoroscopy and x-ray film. Before the needle is inserted, you will receive a local anaesthetic in the back at the needle puncture site. Sometimes a CT scan may be performed after the procedure to examine the structure of the discs in more detail.
