Postgraduate Residency: Educational Activities

Academic Half-Day (Every Wednesday)

  • Medical Oncology session: 1:30 - 3:30

    Small group session where assigned resident reviews the topic and teaches their peers under the supervision of a staff oncologist.

  • Multidisciplinary Oncology Teaching Rounds: 3:30-5:00 (Sep to Jun) 

    Didactic session by staff oncologist(s)

Other Education Activities

  • Longitudinal Clinic Rounds: 12:00-13:00 (Monthly, last Monday of each block rotation all year round)

    A new initiative has enabled residents and fellows to have their own clinics and patient roster. It allows the trainees to have continuity of care and see the outcomes of their decisions longitudinally through all stages of an individual patient’s care. They are responsible for managing all facets of a patient’s care including complications, advocating for treatments/benefits to government and insurance companies, clinic management etc. The "Longitudinal rounds" once per month allows the trainees to present one of their patients to their peers and staff to have an open forum for clinical case discussion and educational interaction”.

  • Research Rounds: 12:00 to 13:00 (Monthly, second Thursday of each block rotation all year round)

    Resident / Fellow presenting ongoing research projects

  • Current Oncology Rounds (Journal Club): 8:00-9:15 AM (4th Wednesday, of each month, September to June)

    Resident led sessions reviewing 2 key tumour site specific articles and their methodological issues

Curriculum for Clinical Research Education Program

  • 2 hour session every 2 months (2 year rotation of topics)
  • coordinated by the Department of Medicine for all PGY4/5
  • taught by The Methods Centre, Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Ottawa Health Research Institute

Annual Retreat

Residents coordinated off-site activity

Invited speakers to address topics around Can Meds domains (other than medical expert) e.g. medico-legal, ethics, professionalism, practice management
