Postgraduate Fellowship Training: Why do a Fellowship in Ottawa?

The city of Ottawa provides a vibrant mix of urban and rural practice. It is the Nation's capital and therefore has a broad range of cultural events to offer. (http://thinkottawamedicine.ca/life-in-ottawa/).

The University of Ottawa Medical Oncology Training Program (MOTP) is affiliated with:

  • The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre (TOHCC) (TOHCC) is a comprehensive cancer centre and employs 21 medical oncologists and sees 9181 new and approximately 22000 follow up patients a year

  • The Ottawa Health Research Institute (OHRI) (OHRI) is the resource arm of the hospital which employs approximately 100 staff and 14 senior scientists

  • Many of our oncologists are internationally recognized for their work in clinical research, trial design, basic science, teaching and clinical epidemiology.

  • Two local investigators, Dr. Glen Goss (Lung) and Dr. Derek Jonker (GI) are Disease Site Chairs at the  National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group (www.ctg.queensu.ca).

  • The TOHCC clinical trials office has over 70 active protocols including a growing phase I and II program.

Our program is also unique in that Fellows have their own, longitudinal "Fellows Clinic" where for the time of their Fellowship they actually run their own practice and learn many of the skills required for subsequent independent practice as a specialist physician.
