UOttawa researchers receive more than $950,000 from Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation

OTTAWA, June 26, 2009 — The University of Ottawa has been awarded $962,588 in research funding from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF).

The money, which comes from the CBCF’s Ontario Region research grant program, supports innovative, leading-edge projects exploring a broad range of areas in breast-cancer treatment.

Three projects in all have been approved: the first, led by Dr. Michelle Chiu of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, proposes advancements in pain reduction and disability management following breast-cancer surgery; the second, under the direction of Dr. Tony Durst of the Department of Chemistry, aims to develop non-steroidal estrogens for hormone-replacement therapy; the third, spearheaded by Dr. Luc Sabourin of the Department of Medicine, studies the regulation of cell motility (how single-celled organisms move in their environments and move things inside the cell).

The University of Ottawa, one of Canada’s top research-intensive universities, is dedicated to winning the battle against cancer. We are committed to excellence and encourage an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation that attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
