Dr. John Fletcher Named Editor-in-Chief of CMAJ
The Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) has appointed Dr. John Fletcher as the new editor-in-chief of the publication. Dr. Fletcher served as deputy editor (research) for CMAJ for the past three years and is an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine.
Originally from the United Kingdom, Fletcher received his medical degree from the University of Cambridge, UK, and his master’s degree in public health from Harvard University. While in the UK, Fletcher practiced as a family physician in addition to his role as an editor at the British Medical Journal (BMJ); one of the world’s top medical journals.
Fletcher has identified three priorities as the new editor-in-chief: increasing the publication’s digital presence, increasing the publication of high impact international research, and raise CMAJ’s profile while making it more useful to practicing physicians.
Canadian Medical Association (CMA) president Dr. John Haggie said Fletcher holds “wide experience in medical research, writing and editing” and his previous positions as well as clinical and business background “have already proven to be a great asset to the journal.” Dr. Fletcher’s strong vision for CMAJ should help inspire a new era for the publication and maintain its reputation across Canada as a primary resource on medical knowledge and information.
