Faculty of Medicine Experts in the News: Week of February 13

Friday, February 17, 2012

  • The Toronto Star produced a news feature on dementia coupled with an aging population, and how it affected driving and road safety. Dr. Shawn Marshall, currently researching for a project called Candrive to improve testing for senior drivers, was quoted in the article saying that the majority of older drivers were safe and warned against unfairly portraying the older population. Dr. Marshall is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, and the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine.

  • Postmedia News ran a feature on the risks of drug addiction among anesthesiologists which ran in the Ottawa Citizen, Vancouver Sun, and various papers nationally. Dr. Derek Puddester, Director of the Faculty Wellness Program, said that doctors make “great patients”, and possess a strong work ethic and values as well as high recovery rates in cases of trouble. Dr. Puddester is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry.

  • Dr. Michael Gollob from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) was interviewed by the Ottawa Citizen regarding cardiac arrest cases in young people, including teenagers. According to Dr. Gollob, while youth will show signs of an abnormal heart condition, the majority will not, making cases of cardiac arrest difficult to understand. Dr. Gollob is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine.

  • Dr. Jocelynn Cook’s research on infertility rates in Canada also made the headlines in the Ottawa Citizen. Dr. Cook and co-authors of the study have found that infertility rates are rising, with a growing number of young women having trouble conceiving. This study was the first on the subject in nearly two decades. Dr. Cook is an adjunct professor with the Faculty of Medicine.

  • Faculty of Medicine second-year students are making waves in Ottawa media while promoting the ninth annual Shave for a Cure event. MD students Pamela Lai, Bradley Sarak, and Justin Losier appeared on CTV Morning Live on Thursday, February 16, where Losier shaved his newly dyed purple mane to promote the cause. Event volunteer and MD student Noor Amily was profiled in the Kanata EMC the same day.
