Craig Oliver and uOttawa to raise funds for Fellowships in Ophthalmology at Oliver’s 70th Birthday Bash

Craig OliverOttawa, November 14, 2008 — Celebrated CTV journalist, Craig Oliver and the University of Ottawa are raising funds for the W. Bruce Jackson Endowment for Fellowships in Ophthalmology with the occasion of Craig Oliver’s 70th birthday. The “Eye-Ayes Have It” Birthday Bash will be held at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier on Wednesday, November 19, 2008.

The growing guest list is a “Who’s Who” of Ottawa and Parliament with distinguished speakers including the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, NDP Leader the Honourable Jack Layton, the Honourable Peter MacKay, CTV Chief Anchor Lloyd Robertson, CTV Ottawa news anchor Max Keeping, and newly elected Liberal MP, Justin Trudeau.

Craig Oliver, CTV’s Chief Political Correspondent and co-anchor of the weekly public affairs series, Question Period, is legally blind and has been a long time supporter of the University of Ottawa Eye Institute, The Ottawa Hospital. "The University of Ottawa Eye Institute has done so much for me, so I want to be able to do something for them, and for a cause that obviously means a lot to me” says Mr. Oliver. “I thought that turning my birthday into a fundraiser would be a good way to start building funds for the Fellowships”.

“The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa is committed to supporting medical research and training,” said Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. “The W. Bruce Jackson Endowment for Fellowships in Ophthalmology was established in 2008 to recognize Dr. Jackson’s exceptional work at the University of Ottawa and the University of Ottawa Eye Institute as well as to provide financial support for Fellows undertaking subspecialty training in Ophthalmology.”

Craig Oliver is an award winning reporter who has worked in the Canadian news media for more than five decades. He has served as CTV's director of news and current affairs, as producer of Canada AM's inaugural season and as CTV's Washington Bureau Chief.

Dr. W. Bruce Jackson is Professor and past Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa, the past Director General of the University of Ottawa Eye Institute and the past Program Director for Vision at the Ottawa Health Research Institute.
