Mandate Renewed for Faculty Dean Dr. Jacques Bradwejn

The Faculty of Medicine is pleased to announce that the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors from the University of Ottawa has approved the renewal of the mandate of Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, Dean of the Faculty. Dr. Bradwejn’s renewed mandate is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2012 and will last for a period of five years.

In a letter addressing the uOttawa community, President Allan Rock congratulated Dr. Bradwejn for his success with the Faculty during his first mandate. “I would like to thank Dean Bradwejn for his noteworthy achievements in the area of education and research, as well as in the improvement of relationships with our principal hospital and research centre partners.”

Under Dr. Bradwejn’s leadership, the Faculty of Medicine has experienced a period of notable accomplishments, including but not limited to:

  • the Faculty’s MD program ranking first in Canada on accreditation and first in CaRMS for discipline;
  • residency programs top tiers on accreditation;
  • a 28 per cent increase in Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grants in three years;
  • ranking fifth for total grants and second for research intensity in Canada;
  • the creation of the multi-partnered uOttawa Brain-Mind Research Institute;
  • the ratification of a single affiliation agreement between the Academic Health Sciences Centers and four faculties of the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Bradwejn is a graduate of medicine at University of Sherbrooke and psychiatry at McGill University.  He completed a research fellowship in psychopharmacology at McGill University and in neuropsychopharmacology at the University of Montreal, and is internationally renowned for his active involvement in psychiatric and mental health research with a focus on anxiety disorders.He previously held positions as Associate Professor of Psychiatry at McGill University and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto before joining the University of Ottawa in 1998.

Prior to serving as Dean, Dr. Bradwejn served as the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University,  as Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Royal Ottawa Hospital, and as Head of Psychiatry with The Ottawa Hospital.  His expertise has been sought after across the globe, publishing 160 articles and book chapters, attending over 400 scientific and educational conferences and over 350 educational media interventions.

“I am grateful for the last five years.  I have had the opportunity to serve whilst enjoying the dedication and support from faculty members, department and division chairs and our strong leadership team,” said Dr. Bradwejn. “As a result, the Faculty has shown enviable growth in education and research and is now on firm ground for more success and for large strategic initiatives. I very much look forward to serving the faculty with my colleagues for the next five years.”
