Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce that following the release of Maclean's 2011 University Ranking, the University of Ottawa has ranked second in Canada in the Medical/Science Grants category. These rankings are based on the number of peer-reviewed research grants per full-time professor received from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This is yet another milestone for the Faculty and the University as a whole. We at the Faculty along with our research institute partners have made significant contributions to research in Canada and helped propel the University's stellar research reputation in recent years. Since 2003, we are experiencing the second highest growth rate in overall Tri-Council funding and the third highest growth rate in CIHR funding for Universities with Medical Schools.

"These numbers are impressive and demonstrate that the University together with our Faculty and its hospital-based partners has rapidly evolved into a research intensive institution, with an enviable national and international reputation," says Dr. Bernard Jasmin, Vice-Dean of Research at the Faculty of Medicine. "This is an exciting time for us and we should all take great pride in our success as we now set our objective to become number one in research intensity."

Dr. Jasmin's sentiments on the successes in research for our University are further echoed by Dr. Mona Nemer, Vice-President of Research. "Success in this rigorous peer review process testifies to the excellence of our researchers from the Faculties of Medicine, Health Sciences and our hospitals," says Dr. Nemer. "It is their dedication and leadership that fosters the next generation of scientists and improves the lives and health of Canadians."

I believe every member of this Faculty plays a pivotal role in the ongoing success of our school and our ongoing achievements in research. Congratulations on making the University and the Faculty of Medicine a top-tier research intensive university in Canada!

Felicitations!
