Please note that, until further notice, SWOMEN will not accept applications for third year Core rotations

Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN)

The SWOMEN Rural Regional Program focuses on providing opportunities for learners from all Ontario medical schools to experience life in a small rural or larger mid-sized community in Southwestern Ontario. The program encourages students to develop their knowledge and skills and to explore their interests in a wide range of communities from Leamington to Tobermory.

Many family physicians in small rural communities throughout Southwestern Ontario welcome students to work alongside through the full range of their practice, including time spent in local community hospitals. Specialists in mid-sized regional communities provide educational opportunities for students during clerkship and electives, as permitted by individual medical schools.

Although affiliated with The University of Western Ontario, the SWOMEN network welcomes students from all Ontario medical schools. It provides accommodation and a travel stipend. When the placement is confirmed, students are required to register for their electives with the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario.

Placements are available for students for summer electives as well as clerkship and fourth year electives. All placements must be a minimum of four weeks in one community.

Relevant Information

  • Application Policy

Applications are available on the SWOMEN Website at www.swomen.ca. Applications should be submitted four months prior to the rotation start date, if possible, to allow sufficient time for placement coordination. All placements depend upon preceptor availability.

  • Cancellation Policy

When an elective has been confirmed, it is considered unprofessional for a learner to cancel. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, students are advised to contact the SWOMEN office as soon as possible.

For further details, please consult the SWOMEN Website.
