Postgraduate Program
The Postgraduate Medical Education Program in Distributed Sites
Although few Royal College programs have mandatory community rotations (e.g., Internal Medicine), residents are advised to include such a placement in their program, making them increasingly popular. In most of Ontario, the established Rural Networks financially support specialty postgraduate rotations that have at least a one-month duration. The funding covers travel and housing expenses, and offers a teaching stipend for the preceptor.
For occasional community rotations, residents should review the Websites of the major rural networks, and apply directly via the network.
For programs aiming at an ongoing relationship with a preceptor or community hospital, an Accreditation site visit should be done. The DME Office can offer assistance with this process, as it has created affiliations with a number of institutions and has experience in establishing new programs (e.g., accreditation, site visits, and orientation). For further information, please contact the DME Office.
Family Medicine rural opportunities are either handled through the Family Medicine department, or the Director of Community Teaching practices from that department.
