Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM)
NOSM is the most recent Ontario Medical School with the unique mandate of being fully distributed. Located in Northern Ontario, with primary sites in both Sudbury and Thunder Bay, the school took over two previous decentralized medical training networks, the Northwestern Ontario Medical Program (NOMP) and the Northeastern Ontario Medical Education Corporation (NOMEC), offering northern rural rotations to Ontario medical students. Although NOSM is responsible to local learners first, there are opportunities for other students for rural rotations at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Also, Northeastern Ontario has a large Francophone population, thereby providing selected opportunities for Ottawa Francophone students.
The Northern Ontario Electives Program provides a variety of rural, remote, and small urban clinical learning opportunities in Northern Ontario. Learners can expect a high quality educational experience, one that offers one-on-one individual teaching and hands-on exposure to a wide range of medical learning situations with a clinical facilitator, all in an exciting practice environment. Some of the clinical learning sites include: Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Sioux Lookout, Wawa, Kenora, North Bay, Timmins and Sault Ste. Marie, as well as smaller centers throughout Northern Ontario.
Elective and Core rotations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The rotation must be a minimum of four weeks duration. Online applications are available through NOSM Website at www.nosm.ca (under Education tab/Northern Ontario Electives/Online Application Forms). This program also offers learner travel and accommodation assistance. Please refer to the Learner Policies Procedures and Protocols.

Cancellations Policy for Learners
Clinical teachers are dedicated to educating medical learners and often rearrange their clinical schedules to accommodate and welcome learners into their busy practice. Cancellation of a confirmed rotation is only accepted in emergency situations. In such a case, the learner is expected to contact the NOSM office as well as the preceptor to advise them of the situation. All learner program offices subsequently receive a copy of the placement cancellation.
