Clerkship
Third Year
Fourth year
Anyone who does not complete a rural rotation in third year must do a rural elective of four consecutive weeks in fourth year. This can be difficult to organize, given the elective choices most students make in pursuit of a residency position. The Mandatory Rural month must be completed in order to graduate. We strongly recommend you complete this rotation in third year. Click here to view the revised rural/community guidelines.
Students are expected to organize the rural elective as they would any other elective. The DME office will pre-approve all requests to ensure that they are in compliance with the rural requirement. Please notify the DME office of the site being considered at least four months prior to the start of the rotation.
Once the mandatory rural rotation has been completed, students may consider rural electives of less than four weeks duration. However, in accordance with the provincial policy, no funding for travel or housing is provided for rotations of less than four weeks duration.
Please consult the rural networks for information on the large number of elective possibilities.
