In Memoriam
Remembering Dr. Caroline Hetenyi ( April 9th, 1923 - October 27th, 2011)
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Dr. Caroline Hetenyi. Until her retirement in 1992, she was clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine. She is predeceased by her husband, the late Dr. Geza Hetenyi, Emeritus Professor of Physiology and former Vice Dean of Research at the Faculty. After her husband’s passing in 1998, Dr. Caroline Hetenyi established The Geza Hetenyi Memorial Studentship in the History of Medicine at the University to honour her husband’s memory and carry on his commitment to education.
The Studentship grants opportunities for qualified students to conduct original research studies in the History of Medicine during summer recess over the course of three months. Dr. Geza Hetenyi, a former physiologist and researcher, was a published author of a book and several articles on medical history and believed strongly in the importance of teaching the subject for students entering their medical fields.
As founder of the Studentship, Dr. Caroline Hetenyi will continue to have an important impact on the students in the Faculty. Since its establishment, 21 students have benefited from the fund and published insightful research on medical history, from the history of palliative care nursing, the development of AIDS and its impact on society, to Aboriginal health care in Northern Ontario and many more.
Dr. Caroline Hetenyi came to Canada from Budapest, Hungary in 1956. She trained as a gastroenterologist and acted as consultant at the Women’s College Hospital (1961-70) and at the Ottawa General Hospital (1970-92). In addition to her clinical duties, she contributed to the training of students, interns and residents, sharing with her husband a dedication to education.
To ensure that future students can continue to benefit from this opportunity it was her wish that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Geza Hetenyi Memorial Studentship in the History of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, uOttawa.
The Faculty of Medicine is evermore grateful for the commitment and contributions she has made to medical education and for the creation of a studentship that has further enabled students to pursue their passion for medical history and research excellence for the past 11 years.

Dr. William « Bill » Norman Clarke
May 18, 1943 - February 16, 2009
CLARKE, Dr. William "Bill" Norman (born May 18th, 1943) It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing away in hospital of our loved one, William Norman, on Monday, February 16th, 2009. He was the loving husband of Teri, dear father to Jessica Morris (Scott) and James (Chrissy) and proud Grampa to Addison and Lachlin. He also leaves a brother-in-law, Gordon Wride (Jeannine).
Bill did his undergraduate, medical and residency training at the University of Ottawa, then completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals in 1974. Returning to Ottawa, Bill worked in private practice until 1977. He held the position of Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for many years. In 1986, Bill was promoted to full professor at the University of Ottawa. An author of over 60 peer-reviewed scientific papers, he presented more than 100 original papers at national and international meetings, reflecting his broad academic and research interests. He was honored with numerous awards but he was most proud of the Resident Teaching Award in 1993 and again in 2008. Since 1977, he had been for many years the chair of undergraduate ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa and had organized the curriculum for ophthalmology. In addition, he wrote the Self-directed Teaching Modules in Ophthalmology, posted at the COS website. A long-time member of COS, he was a member of the Continuing Medical Education committee from 1983 to 1990, and chaired it from 1990 to 1995. He sat on the COS Board of Directors for many years and served as treasurer from 1986 to 1989. Recently semi-retired, Bill still had a continuing passion for CHEO, for his young patients and for sharing his knowledge by teaching residents and students. While Bill's sense of humor may well have been his defining quality, his standards were known to be very high. He was first and foremost a family man but also an avid Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit player, a world traveler and found great pleasures in gardening.
Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, on Friday, February 20th, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 21st, at 11 am in Resurrection of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, 1940 Saunderson Drive. To honor Bill's memory, in lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a donation to CHEO.From the Ottawa Citizen Obituaries, February 18, 2009
