AIME/uOSSC Fellowships

Applications due September 1, 2012 for July 2013

Introduction

The Academy for Innovation in Medical Education (AIME) and the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) are offering a Fellowship in Medical Education/Simulation. The overall aim of this fellowship is to initiate the process of preparing the candidate for an academic career as a clinician educator. The program will include both:

  • Training and mentorship in curriculum, teaching, and learning.
  • The initiation, design and conduct of innovative research relevant to the field of health professions education and practice.

AIME and the uOSSC have established collaborations with the Medical Council of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada

AIME/uOSSC Fellowship Objectives

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of key issues in medical education relevant to the clinical educator.
  2. Participate in the development of innovative teaching strategies for continuing education, postgraduate trainees or undergraduate medical students.
  3. Initiate, design, conduct, present, and/or publish an educational research project under the supervision of a Senior Research Associate AIME (SRAA) and clinical supervisor.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of concepts in adult learning theory, experimental design, quantitative and qualitative analysis, evaluation, and computer applications in education.
  5. Participate in structured AIME/uOSSC Fellowship curriculum and other educational activities (i.e. AIME Day, rounds).
  6. Demonstrate their commitment to medical education by considering enrolment in a graduate degree program in education (Masters or PhD).
Sponsoring clinical departments will have additional specific objectives for their discipline. Please contact clinical departments for details. If you are applying from outside of Canada and wish to do clinical work during your fellowship, you must apply to the appropriate clinical department.

Expectations for Enrolment in the AIME/uOSSC Fellowship

  1. Enrolment in a Master of Education degree or PhD is strongly recommended and will be viewed favourably.
  2. Minimum 1 year commitment to Fellowship
  3. Minimum 50% protected non-clinical time/duties (NCT)
  4. Co-supervision by a consented AIME Senior Research Associate AIME (SRA) and a clinician within the supporting/sponsoring Department with a similar research interest
  5. Co-supervisors committed to teach within established education program for Fellows

Application Process for the AIME/uOSSC Fellowship

  1. Fellows who do not plan to do clinical work are encouraged to apply through AIME.
  2. Applicants should submit: 1) A completed application form; 2) Current CV; 3) Statement of research interest(s) or proposal; 4) Plans for financial support, and 5) Three letters of reference.

  3. Fellows who do plan to do clinical work must first apply and be accepted by the appropriate clinical department.
  4. Applicants should submit: 1) A completed application form; 2) Current CV; 3) Statement of research interest(s) or proposal; 4) Plans for financial support, and 5) a letter of support from their Department and/or Division Heads acknowledging the protected time requirements.

  5. All international fellows must also complete an application through the Postgraduate Medical Education Office (http://www.med.uottawa.ca/Postgraduate/eng/) under Foreign Fellow Application. Select the appropriate clinical Department, or if no clinical work will be completed, select  AIME/uOSSC Fellowship.

  6. Tuition fees may apply.

  7. No funding is provided during this fellowship through AIME.
