2011 AIME Education Grant

Purpose

To support research, development, and/or implementation of curricular projects to enhance medical education in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

Goals

Support those interested in pursuing scholarship in medical education through innovation and evaluation and/or research.

Eligibility

Applicants must be involved in teaching and/or medical education research at the University of Ottawa. Applications may be individual or joint, involving one or more departments, disciplines, or faculties. A faculty member of the Faculty of Medicine must be a contributor to all projects either as an investigator or a senior supervisor. Students, residents and fellows may apply but are required to have a coinvestigator who has an academic appointment in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Although eligible topics may include faculty development, course development and/or medical education research across the educational continuum, this year a majority of the funds will be allocated to projects in Postgraduate Medical Education.

Applications that include research must meet contemporary standards of educational research, which include the relevance of the research question, the quality of the research design, ethical review of the submission, accountability for funds received, and the ability to complete the project during the funding period. Innovative pilot research projects are welcomed. Proposals to create new and innovative educational courses, programs or projects must include an evaluative component assessing the impact of the intervention.

Budget

Justification of budget items must be provided in a one-page outline. The following items will not be funded:

  • The purchase of equipment
  • Activities which are an integral part of course planning (e.g. Annotated bibliographies, course outlines, student manuals and copying costs)
  • Salary or honoraria for investigators
  • Travel, accommodation or meals for external investigators to visit Ottawa
  • Medical writers
  • Preparation of Powerpoint slides for presentation unless justified

Up to $1500.00 may be requested to defray the costs for travel, accommodation, meals or conference registration for investigators to disseminate the project findings in a peer reviewed venue and publications costs.

Selection Process

The AIME Educational Innovations and Research Committee will assess proposals and name successful applicants by December 23, 2011.

Selection will be based on an assessment of the overall merit of the application. The criteria for this assessment are:

  • Relevance to the field of medical education
  • Potential benefits for the advancement of medical education
  • Quality of the educational methodology, evaluation and/or research design
  • Applicants’ ability to successfully complete the project presented
  • Statement of costs
  • Realistic time frame for the project presented
  • A plan for the continuation of the project (or benefits) beyond the initial period
  • Applicability to a branch of medical education at the University of Ottawa.

Value

The maximal amount that will be provided per project is $20,000.00. Evidence of ethical clearance, where required, must be submitted before funds will be released.

Duration

Projects must not extend beyond a two-year period.

Dissemination

The dissemination of educational innovations and research findings is required. The financial support of the Faculty of Medicine, Academy for Innovation in Medical Education must be acknowledged in all publications and presentations resulting from this grant. Successful applicants will be required to present their findings as a paper or poster at the AIME Annual Medical Education Day and to submit for presentation at a Canadian and/or international medical education meeting.

Submission Process

All submissions must be made electronically. Paper submissions will not be accepted. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Submissions may be made in either French or English as preferred by the investigators.

The application should be submitted in the order and content as follows:

  1. Front page: Title of project; applicant(s) with affiliations and role in the project; and budgetary request
  2. 250 word structured abstract providing a description of project
  3. Proposal
    • The proposal should be no more than five (5) pages in length, single‐spaced, in 12 point type with 1" margins. Number the pages in the bottom right corner.
    • The proposal must include the following sections: Background information, problem statement, literature review, methodology (education methods and evaluation and/or research design), time‐line (to complete proposed work and disseminate results), and a description of how the project will be continued or will inform future work.
    • Also, a one page summary of the budget with justification of expenses must be included. Attachments such as a budget, bibliography, rating tools, and models are allowed, and are not counted in the five page proposal limit.
  4. Curriculum vitae
    • A curriculum vitae must be submitted for each investigator. Limit to three pages; Include any previous educational innovations, education administrative roles, publications, and grants received for the last three years.

Submissions should be e‐mailed to aime@uOttawa.ca with the subject line “AIME grant submission.” All submissions will be acknowledged within 48 hours.

Closing Date

Complete applications must be received at AIME no later than midnight, Sunday October 23, 2011. Late applications will not be considered. Funds will be available to investigators in January 2012.

Final Report

On the completion of the project grantees are required to:

  1. Present a two-page report on the project within six weeks following the termination date.
  2. Enclose a financial statement (to be matched against original budget); unused funds must be returned.

Final reports must be submitted to the Assistant Dean, AIME. Those who fail to submit a final report will not be eligible for future AIME funding.
